What Does Your User Agent Say About You?

Archive

A user agent is a computer program representing a person, for example, a browser in a Web context.

Besides a browser, a user agent could be a bot scraping webpages, a download manager, or another app accessing the Web. Along with each request they make to the server, browsers include a self-identifying User-Agent HTTP header called a user agent (UA) string. This string often identifies the browser, its version number, and its host operating system.

Spam bots, download managers, and some browsers often send a fake UA string to announce themselves as a different client. This is known as user agent spoofing.

The user agent string can be accessed with JavaScript on the client side using the navigator.userAgent property.

A typical user agent string looks like this: "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:35.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/35.0".

Platform identifiers change based on the operating system being used, and version numbers also increment as time passes. Mapping UA string tokens to a more human-readable browser name for use in code is a common pattern on the web today.

When Microsoft is notified about these types of issues, website owners are contacted and informed about the updated UA. In these cases, Microsoft uses a list of UA overrides in our Beta and Stable channels to maximize compatibility for users who access these sites.

You can change the user agent of Microsoft Edge via Developer Tools menu. For instance, if an user agent identifies itself as a Firefox running on Android, web servers will serve web pages specialized for mobile devices.

As mentioned earlier above, changing user agent in Microsoft Edge is extremely easy. You can change it via Developer Tools menu which you can access by clicking the three-dot icon in the top-right corner of Microsoft Edge.

CMA's Michael Much more loves to sing its praises on the desktop, but why use it on your mobile phone or tablet? If you already run Edge in Windows 10, you can sync your passwords, favorites, and other data with the mobile edition.

Click on the Installation button at Edge's Google Play page and choose your device. I'll use an iPhone X as my test subject here, but Edge works similarly on an Android device.

It's such a convenient feature to be able to pick up where you left off (especially since tab/history sync isn't here yet), even though it's only possible to send tabs to Apple's own mobile browser. Shows like Witcher look like garbage compared to anything on the HDR Channel on YouTube.

That way I can prove if there's a problem, or if everything is fine and Netflix compression is just terrible. Designed for Windows 10, this browser edged its way onto iOS and Android devices in 2017.

You can also send webpage links from your mobile device to your computer. Click on the Installation button at Edge's Google Play page and choose your device.

Edge may recognize your Microsoft Account name or email address. If not, type your email address at the Sign in screen and enter your password.

If you choose to sign in with your Microsoft Account, you may see a screen asking if you want to Sync passwords. You can type the website address you want to visit or the keyword or phrase you want to find.

Tap the microphone icon again and speak the address or keyword or phrase you want to find. You can trigger a website via a QR code through your device's camera.

Tap the camera icon (the one that looks like a horizontal line in brackets) in the URL field. Aim your phone's camera at the QR code you want to scan.

Your camera should read the code, prompting Edge to open the associated web page. At your profile screen, turn on the option to Sync passwords.

You can block pop-ups and cookies and choose not to share your browsing history. Unless you have a reason to change any of these settings, leave them at their default values.

Again, you can leave the settings at their default values unless you have a specific reason to turn one on or off. Return to Settings > Privacy > Clear browsing data.

You can change the search engine from Bing to Google or Yahoo. Further down, you can change the theme for the browser to Dark or keep Light as the default.

Tap on New In Private tab to open a page in a new tab in which the browser does not save your browsing history, temporary files, form data, cookies, and other data. Tap on the book icon in the URL field to see the page in Reading view.

Finally, you can send your current page to Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 to view it on your computer. Segue to your computer where Microsoft Edge should automatically spring to life to display the page you sent.

The landscape of mobile browsers is quite complex, with several major players (pre-installed in most cases) and a number of locally popular contenders. While all phones come with pre-installed browsers, both Google Play and Apple App Store offer a number of alternative browsers, some focusing on speed and lightness, others on saving bandwidth and blocking ads, and an ever-increasing amount claiming to increase privacy and reduce a users' mobile digital footprint.

A simple regex solution searching for keywords will struggle in terms of accuracy and detection speed. It offers a patented algorithm that detects and identifies all devices requesting online content through parsing UA strings based on a constantly updated, massive list of connected devices.

NOT a Bot question -- it's not worth the trouble to me to try to fiddle around with writing some Python script, although it would be instructive. However, I only use Linux for internet browsing at home, and while I faithfully use Bing (despite a few shortcomings, especially in the way it obfuscates YouTube links initially, important for a slower connection -- at least I get the satisfaction of not giving away Google Analytics data for free to random websites).
