What Does Your User Agent Say About You?

Archive

A user agent is a computer program representing a person, for example, a browser in a Web context.

Besides a browser, a user agent could be a bot scraping webpages, a download manager, or another app accessing the Web. Along with each request they make to the server, browsers include a self-identifying User-Agent HTTP header called a user agent (UA) string. This string often identifies the browser, its version number, and its host operating system.

Spam bots, download managers, and some browsers often send a fake UA string to announce themselves as a different client. This is known as user agent spoofing.

The user agent string can be accessed with JavaScript on the client side using the navigator.userAgent property.

A typical user agent string looks like this: "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:35.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/35.0".

Changing the useragentstring can be useful in certain scenarios when some website's functionality is locked down to the specific platform and you need to bypass the restriction. In today's article, we will learn how to change the useragentstring in the popular Opera browser.

This allows developers to differentiate various device classes like tablets, phones, Desktop PCs and laptops, and more. The useragentstring can provide web servers some details about the user's operating system, and the browser version.

Prior to version 12, the browser had its own rendering engine, Presto, which was ditched in favor of Blink. Alternatively, you can enter a custom user agent value using the text box below the list.

The list includes various versions of Internet Explorer, Edge, Opera, Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. Using the built-in Developer Tools option, you can restore the default value of the user agent in the Opera browser any time.

Tip: If you are switching the user agent in Opera frequently, you can save a lot of time and use the following extension: Also known as user agent spoofing, here are 2 ways to fake Opera ’s useragentstring so that it will identify itself as Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Scroll down your mouse to the User agent section and uncheck the Select automatically option. Select your desired user agent from the drop-down menu and reload the current page to apply the change.

The flexibility is provided as a workaround for users to access websites which do not recognize or support Opera, and worse still, block access or prevent loading or web pages on Opera browser. Type Spoof Sergeant ID into the quick find box next to “Show All”.

This is in contrast to experiences where the functionality was part of the basic browser (Chrome, Opera) or provided a workaround (Firefox). One can only speculate that this third party trend will continue as the browser families seek to provide a secure and robust in their core products.

Once installed (which, unlike Firefox does not need a restart) this extension places a button on the top left of the screen (or it can be invoked by right-clicking on any empty part of the currently displayed web page). In Opera 11 you have to make a Panel visible by clicking the < button at the bottom left of the browser window.

In the window that opens select the 'Button' tab then 'Preferences' and drag the 'Identify as Opera combo box onto the top browser bar. Use ToolsQuick Preference and select the browser you want to emulate from the radio button list at the foot of the menu.

The default values in this file are clearly set based on reported site problems. Finally, with Opera 8 there is also a snazzy feature to allow you to play with JavaScript variables so you can pretend to be a real MSI browser to client side browser detection routines (Opera info on this topic).

To invoke the feature press the F12 key in any page (or click the '*' (gear wheel like) button on the top extreme right and select 'F12 Developer Tools'). MSI 10 adds a menu Item labeled 'Browser Mode: IE10' which provides a subset of options for local processing only.

Any additional values displayed in the MSI UA string are defined in the registry. You can add Compatible, Version and Platform strings as shown above and described in this MSN article.

To fix this problem before you modify the Prefs.js file use ToolsOptionsWeb Features and disable (uncheck) enable Java. There is a fairly rudimentary UA change feature in the stock chrome installation invoked using Menu (top right corner) More ToolsDeveloper Tools then click the telephone icon (top right in the Developer toolbar) which seems to be primarily aimed at mobile testing and emulation.

Chrome (as of version 17) provides a sneaky (in the sense that it is well hidden) method to change the UA. Click the Customize and Control icon (a spanner) in the top right of the main window and select Tools Developer Tools from the menus.

However, switching your browser’s user agent no longer requires that you install third-party software, such as extensions. Over the past few years, mainstream browsers have all started including such functionality as a part of their developer console or within standard menus.

Although uncommon, there is a chance for browser extensions to become hijacked for malicious purposes, which could be a risk to your security. In this article, let’s go over how you can change your user agent in today’s most popular browsers without an extension.

If you look or scroll down towards the bottom of this panel, you should see a User agent label, which includes a respective set of options. Here, you can select from a set of defined user agents or even enter your own custom useragentstring.

If you ever wanted to make your web traffic seem like it was coming from a different browser–say, to trick a site that claims it’s incompatible with yours–you can.

If you don’t see the console at the bottom, click the menu button in the top right corner of the Developer Tools pane–that’s the button just to the left of the “x”–and select “Show Console”. On the Network conditions tab, uncheck “Select automatically” next to User agent.

It only works while you have the Developer Tools pane open, and it only applies to the current tab. To create the preference, right-click on the about:config page, point to New, and select String.

This setting applies to every open tab and persists until you change it, even if you close and reopen Firefox. To revert Firefox to the default user agent, right-click the “general.user agent.override” preference and select Reset.

Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer have user agent switchers in their developer tools, and they’re nearly identical. To open them, click the settings menu and select “F12 Developer Tools” or just press F12 on your keyboard.

The developer tools will open in a separate pane at the bottom of the window. Click the “Emulation” tab and choose an user agent from the Useragentstring box.
