What Does Your User Agent Say About You?

Archive

A user agent is a computer program representing a person, for example, a browser in a Web context.

Besides a browser, a user agent could be a bot scraping webpages, a download manager, or another app accessing the Web. Along with each request they make to the server, browsers include a self-identifying User-Agent HTTP header called a user agent (UA) string. This string often identifies the browser, its version number, and its host operating system.

Spam bots, download managers, and some browsers often send a fake UA string to announce themselves as a different client. This is known as user agent spoofing.

The user agent string can be accessed with JavaScript on the client side using the navigator.userAgent property.

A typical user agent string looks like this: "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:35.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/35.0".

Platform identifiers change based on the operating system being used, and version numbers also increment as time passes. Mapping UA string tokens to a more human-readable browser name for use in code is a common pattern on the web today.

When mapping the new Edge token to a browser name, Microsoft recommends using a different name than the one developer used for the legacy version of Microsoft Edge to avoid accidentally applying any legacy workarounds that are not applicable to Chromium-based browsers. When Microsoft is notified about these types of issues, website owners are contacted and informed about the updated UA.

In these cases, Microsoft uses a list of UA overrides in our Beta and Stable channels to maximize compatibility for users who access these sites. Microsoft Edge is the software giant’s big bet in Windows10, and although the browser has until now failed to gain traction, it wins new users slowly but surely.

But as more people make the transition to Microsoft Edge and discover the Internet Explorer successor, some are trying to figure out how to perform a series of tasks, like switching the user agent. All browsers come with such settings, in Microsoft Edge running on Windows10 October 2018 Update (version 1803) it is located in the Developer Tools menu.

Microsoft Edge lets you change not only the user agent string, which can be anything from Internet Explorer and Google Chrome to mobile browsers like Safari, but also devices, with support for Lucia phones, Surface Book, iPhones, and old Nexus models currently being offered. iPhone X and Samsung phones aren’t included, but on the other hand, there’s a custom tab that lets you create a dedicated profile for a device of your own.

Microsoft Edge is currently at a little over 4 percent market share, and the upcoming October 2018 Update is expected to convince a few more users to switch. Windows10 October 2018 Update will go live to the production ring in the coming weeks, with Microsoft expected to sign off the RTM build in just a few days.

Changing the user agent string can be useful in certain scenarios when some website’s functionality is locked down to the specific platform and you need to bypass the restriction. STEP 3: After that, in the Emulation tab, click in the User agent string drop-down list under Mode section.

STEP 4: Finally, choose the desired web browser to change the user agent string. Sometimes abbreviated as UA, the user agent is a browser text string that is given to each website you visit.

UA's contain information such as the browser version, compatibility, operating system, and any modifying plugins. Using this data, a website can assess the capabilities of your computer, optimizing a page's performance and display.

Can you offer any explanation why the two Wuaueng.dll (above image) would be so different? Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site.

My 1511 version of Win 10 started updating yesterday morning on my new 4G metered service, and I was thinking I could take the 5 GB download hit on my monthly allowance. It now only downloaded 16.07, but it also downloaded 1703 and BOTH failed to install because the 40 GB partition on an 80 GB hard drive that it was installed on RAN OUT OF ROOM after it downloaded 10 GB of updates that weren't installed.

Before I started the upgrade there was over 15 GB free space?? So here I am again with 15 GB of downloaded upgrades to do what less than 5 GB was supposed to do to begin with.
